Philadelphia Half Marathon 11.23.08

Nazarío P. Martínez, Jr receiving his Philadelphia Half Marathon Medal & DetectTheMutation Certificate

The Philadelphia Half-Marathon was in honor of my father Nazarío P. Martínez, Jr., a two time cancer survivor of both gastric and colon cancer in 1995 and 1999, respectively.

Philadelphia was selected because of my father's love for American Presidential History. In 1995 President Bill Clinton came to our hometown of Selma to speak. My dad wanted so much to see him, but was unable to go because he was very sick after the removal of his stomach and undergoing treatment at the time. Participating in Philadelphia was a chance for me to get close to D.C. and bring a little history back to him!

The Austin Half-Marathon will be in honor of my Uncle Juan Martínez who died of gastric cancer in 2004.

This half-marathon was selected based on location. Victoria, Texas was the home of my uncle; where he built his life, is buried and where his family faithfully resides.

The Santa Cruz Half-Marathon will be in honor of my sister Noemí Martínez Garza who survived both endometrial and colon cancer in 1999 and 2002, respectively. This half-marathon was chosen for Noemí because she received a B.A. in Spanish Literature from University of California, Santa Cruz and where her eldest daughter, Casandra, was born.

My family and I would like to thank all the runners who participated in the 2009 Santa Cruz Half Marathon/10k on behalf DetectTheMutation in honor of my sister Noemí Martínez Garza. It was an amazing experience and we couldn't have done it without your generous and loving support! Thank you so much for training hard and making this happen! I am so incredibly grateful. I hope that you all will join me again in this important effort to raise awareness about Lynch Syndrome! In that, DetectTheMutation made the Santa Cruz Sentinel and San Jose Mercury on race day. It was a very exciting weekend!

I would like to thank my family who came out and participated in this event. It was incredible having my mom, sister, brother, niece, and cousin participate in the 10k, while the rest were our cheerleaders! It was just amazing, thank you!

DetectTheMutation would also like to thank Meghan Hurley and her family for welcoming the team into their home and hosting a fabulous pasta dinner the eve of the big race!

HeartBreak Ridge Half Marathon 09.19.09

http://www.camppendletonraces.com/half.html/

The HeartBreak Ridge Half Marathon is in honor of my Uncle Francisco P. Martínez who died from pancreatic cancer in 1994. Francisco was the first family member to succumb to cancer. This race was selected for him because of his dedication and loyalty to this country as a Marine in the United States Marine Corps. Semper Fidelis.

Long Beach International City Bank Half Marathon 10.11.09

http://www.runlongbeach.com/

The Long Beach International City Bank is in honor of my cousin who was diagnosed with colon cancer in fall 2008.

Eye-Q Two Cities Half Marathon 11.08.09

http://www.runfresno.com/

The Eye-Q Two Cities Half Marathon in Fresno/Clovis CA was selected for my Aunt because this is an area she knows too fondly; where she grew up, married and raised her family. Thus, it would only be appropriate to run this race in her honor.

The OC Half Marathon 05.02.10

http://www.ocmarathon.com/

The OC Half Marathon will be in honor of my cousin who was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2004. He is from Santa Ana and so it would only be appropriate to participate in this great race as it literally passes through his home town.

The remaining half-marathon races are to be determined at a later time.

The half-marathons will be selected based on location's sentimental significance to the family member diagnosed with cancer.

In the meantime, however, DetectTheMutation will be looking for sponsors in order to keep this campaign going. If you are interested in sponsoring please contact Director, Selena Raquel Martínez, at DetectTheMutation.org@gmail.com

Participation

If you would like to join DetectTheMutation by participating in any of the half-marathon events in addition to raising money, you are more than welcome to! Just contact us at DetectTheMutation.org@gmail.com and we'll provide you with all the necessary information.
